Benin Bronze Leopard Heads

This pair of Benin bronze leopard heads are probably the finest we’ve had to date. The Benin Oba or King was often compared to the leopard as it was considered to be his animal equivalent – ‘The King of the Forest’ . Often tamed leopards accompanied the Oba during his annual procession through Benin City, hence why they appear so frequently in Benin tribal art. These depict studded leopard heads with a full leopard mount on the crown.
