17th Century Religious Figure
£895.00
Thought to date from the 17th Century, this polychrome and gilt wood figure is likely from the German school and depicts Charlemagne. In late Baroque style the figure is depicted wearing a crown and fur lined mantle, and holding an orb in his left hand, signifying Imperial power. Although not a Saint he was granted local veneration as a “Blessed” (a step below sainthood) and is still locally honoured in places like Aachen.
