18th/19th Century Religious Table

Thought to date from the late 18th – mid 19th Century and constructed from a mix of timbers including Walnut and Fruitwood, this Southern European table is a very unique piece. The inlayed detailing centrally depicting IHS, the Christogram symbolising Jesus Christ then, to the perimeter, the letters P, G, D, M representing the prayer acronym for Praise, Gratitude, Dedication, and Mercy. This symbology mixed with the rustic vernacular of the table itself suggests use in a Christian establishment, possibly a monastery where the emphasis is on learning and spirituality as opposed to opulence.
